Summer String Orchestra Camp – Pizzicato & Popcorn: Hollywood Hits




A six-day intensive training for young string players

  • Taught by world-class musicians
  • Gain experience in a string orchestra and be featured in ensemble music sessions
  • Make new friends who share the same interest
  • Perform a culminating concert to families and friends




Core Repertoire : Including Music from renowned movies e.g. Disney’s Fantasia, Hunger Games, Pirates of the Caribbean, etc.
Target : Age 10 - 16
Minimum Requirements   : ABRSM / RCM Grade 5 or equivalent
Number of Enrolment  : 40
Audition Requirements  : To prepare 2 movements / pieces of contrasting styles for a total of 7 - 10 minutes and submit the recording of the audition pieces to the Foundation via YouTube or by post. Please refer to the 'Application Method' section in the application form for more details.
Tuition : $3,800 (Bursary is available upon application)

Vancouver Academy of Music

Introducing a new faculty roster for Summer Soundfest that features three esteemed VAM faculty members who specialize in teaching intermediate level string players for the targeted age group of 10-16 years of age. Supporting the proposed VAM faculty will be Teaching Assistants from VAM’s Young Artists’ Collegiate Program (YACP).

Joseph Elworthy – Cello

Joseph Elworthy has been a featured soloist, recitalist, and chamber music performer on such stages as Alice Tully Hall, Suntory Hall, Carnegie Hall, the Library of Congress, and Sejong Hall. Mr. Elworthy has been named a Fellow of The Royal Conservatory of Music for his extraordinary contribution to Canadian Arts and Culture, an honor he shares with such cultural icons as Oscar Peterson, Robertson Davies, Adrienne Clarkson and Leon Fleisher. His recordings can be heard on EMI, Sony, Archtype, and Bose record labels. A graduate of Yale University and the Juilliard School, Mr. Elworthy is the Executive director of the Vancouver Academy of Music where he also serves as head of the cello department. Joseph has been a member of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra since 2002. Joseph plays on a rare Ferdinando Gagliano cello circa 1760 that once belonged to the legendary German cellist, Hugo Becker.

Lawrie Hill – Violin

Co-Head of VAM’s Violin Department, Lawrie Hill is one of Canada’s most respected pedagogues, responsible for producing multiple generations of students who have been accepted to the most prestigious music schools, prize winners of international competitions, and acclaimed professionals who populate orchestras and faculty rosters around the world. Lawrie has garnered a reputation for nurturing exceptionally promising young musical talents into poised and polished performers, applying many of the pedagogical principles she learned from her principal teachers: Gwen Thompson, Tom Rolston, Ronald Sheen, and Yasuko Eastman.

In addition to her significant teaching responsibilities, Ms. Hill has been a member of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra since 1985, and was a long standing member of the former CBC Radio Orchestra. Lawrie has toured many times with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and with several international shows, including: Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Showboat, and The Music of the Night Tour. Other artists that Lawrie has performed with and for include: Pavarotti, Cecilia Bartoli, Natalie Cole, John Denver, Lyle Lovett, Sarah McLaughlin, Diana Krall, Ray Charles, Led Zepplin, Michael Buble, The Rankin Family, and many others. Ms. Hill was a devoted member of the former jazz string quartet, Babayaga for ten years.

DeAnne Eisch- Violin/Viola

EDeAnne Eisch began playing the violin at the age of 4 after her father attended a concert given by Suzuki’s students on their first North American visit to Chicago. DeAnne received her Bachelor of Music degree from DePaul University in Chicago and continued her studies in New York where she was a member of the National Orchestral Association Orchestra. Since moving to Canada she has played with the Vancouver Symphony, the CBC Radio Orchestra, the Vancouver Opera, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra and various chamber ensembles. She currently performs regularly with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and is a dedicated teacher, fostering young violinists. She is the conductor of the VAM Junior Symphony and has been on the faculty of the Vancouver Academy of Music since 2002.

In 2009, Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) Limited issued the Standard Chartered Hong Kong 150th Anniversary Commemorative Charity Banknote – the first banknote in $150 denomination in the world - to celebrate the Bank's 150 years of presence in Hong Kong. Dedicated to the people who have contributed to the development of Hong Kong, net proceeds from the sale of the Commemorative Charity Banknote have been donated to the "Standard Chartered Hong Kong 150th Anniversary Community Foundation", established in 2009, in support of the local community and charities.
